Listed below are the various students' choice book award programs that we as a school participate in annually. They are broken down by grade levels and the websites for each program provide additional resources regarding the books listed. As the books have been reviewed, this year's list have an abundance of great literature for students' reading pleasure. However, there are two books on the 5-8th grade list, Rebecca Caudill Nominees, that we will not have available in our library. As part of our desire to provide Godly, value-based reading Fablehaven and The Alchemyst was not included due to content such as magic, paranormal activities, or language. Additionally the book, Notes from a Midnight Driver, involves teen drinking and driving, however, the story provides appropriate consequences and redeeming lessons learned by the student for his actions. This book will be available in our secondary library for 7th and 8th grade students and 5th or 6th grade students with parent permission.
Monarch Award List and Resources for each book. These books are selected for Kindergarten through Second Grade readers. The reading levels for these grades vary widely, however, the content of these books would be appropriate for all of these students.
Bluestem Award List. This is the first year for this middle-grade elementary reader's book list. As of yet, there are not extensive book resources provided for this award. In the near future these types of book resources may be added at which time our link will be updated. These books are selected for Third through Fifth grade readers. These books are examples of current classics and new books for chapter readers and developing novel-length readers.
Rebecca Caudill Young Reader's Award. This award is one of the longest standing in Illinois for school-aged students. Developed 50 years ago in honor of the program's namesake, Rebecca Caudill, this programs aim is to develop personal satisfaction in reading, and encourage literacy in student's. Designed for Fourth through Eighth grade students, this award has attempted to reach as many grades as possible. However, the reach at times has been contraversial due to the content of the books, especially for the younger readers. As such, with the introduction of the Bluestem Award, it is suggested that this program be limited to Sixth to Eighth grade readers with special permission given to Fifth graders when parental consent is given.
